Female Fantasy Fiction Writers

Writing about Neil Gaiman and Alan Garner in my last post caused me to revisit Anne McCaffrey’s fantasy books. I read most of these in my early twenties, borrowing them from the public library. I would suggest starting with Dragonflight, followed by Dragonquest then The White Dragon. These are the first three books in the Pern series. The chronological reading order and publication order of Anne McCaffrey’s fantasy and science fiction books are not the same so here is a link which gives details of all her books and a suggested reading order.

My book, The Whirlstone, which I am still rewriting, owes a debt to those female fantasy writers of the mid twentieth century such as Anne McCaffrey and Sheri S. Tepper.

The first chapter is almost the same, but the subsequent three chapters of the Whirlstone have been changed. If you would like to read them please follow this link.
